Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2: Apollo

shin megami tensei: persona 2 - apollo

While his initial Persona is Vulcanus, Apollo is the ultimate Persona of the game's protagonist, Suou Tatsuya. Due to an incident that led to his father’s forced resignation from the police force, Tatsuya has been estranged from his family for quite come time. Little is known about his family aside from him having an older brother named Katsuya.

Awesome cosplay! Really love the detailing of the armor here, and the angle for the photography is quite interesting as well! Thanks to Syaza for sending this!

Pretty cosplay by the lovely Korean cosplayer, Gongju Tomia! I wonder if she goes to a studio to get her photos taken? She has a lot of different backdrops for her cosplays! Thanks to Gilbert for suggesting this!

Fruits Basket: Souma Yuki (and a Tag)

fruits basket cosplay - yuki soumaSince Mr. Rock Out tagged me, and the last time I ever got to post a personal article was a Side Rant on the Ragnarok Cosplay of Sohee, I decided to first feature a cosplay of a character I most relate to: Souma Yuki.
Just like Hatori and Momiji, Yuki is a member of the 13 cursed Souma family members. His sign is the Rat’s, and he is very popular in his school, giving him the title of “Prince”.
And I really like this cosplay… Too bad this Yuki is a girl.
And so, as promised, here is Mr. Rock Out’s Tag…

Gundam Seed: Yzak Joule

gundam seed cosplay - yzak joule Yzak Joule is one of the elite pilots of ZAFT in the series Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny. In Gundam Seed, he was under the command of Rau Le Creuset, leader of the prestigious ZAFT Le Creuset special operations team. He is very proud of his elite status, and considers Athrun Zala to be his primary rival.

This character may not be at the top of my favorite characters’ list, but it’s hard to deny how awesome this cosplay is. To explain why this cosplayer is covering his/her right eye, it’s because in the series, Kira Yamato gave him a scar in one of the battles they fought in. Technically, it’s on on his right eye, but above it, and across his face, but it makes sense to people who’ve seen the series.

Final Fantasy VII: Aerith Gainsborough

final fantasy 7 cosplay - aerith gainsboroughFirst, I have to say… This girl looks like the same cosplayer as Felicia of Darkstalkers.

Makes me curious to know who she really is… But I unfortunately have no leads. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I’m all ears!

Anyway, Aerith, the flower girl of Final Fantasy VII who turned out to be the one who can summon the only force capable of repelling the ultimate destructive magic handled by Sephiroth known as “Meteor”. She unfortunately perishes in the game, but most Final Fantasy VII fans still see her as an icon of the series.

That weapon she’s holding look like it’s really made out of marble. Awesome job with this cosplay!

Final Fantasy X: Rikku

final fantasy x cosplay - rikkuTechnically, this is the 5th Rikku I’m posting on this blog. But I didn’t label the post that way because she is the first Rikku I found who cosplayed the X version rather than the more popular X-2 versions.
Rikku is perky and optimistic. She has a close friendship with Tidus, as they are quite similar in their personalities. Since she is an Al Bhed, she suffered discrimination from the Yevonites, but this didn’t change her positive outlook in life. She did whatever she could do to save Yuna from giving her life with the Final Summoning.
I think I like this costume of Rikku’s more than the X-2 ones… I’m not entirely sure why that it. But I think a lot of people will disagree with me on this.

xxxHolic: Watanuki Kimihiro and Ichihara Yuuko

xxxholic cosplay - watanuki kimihiro and ichihara yuukoThis is probably one of the best cosplays I’ve ever come across!
Then again, I tend to say that about all the cosplays I feature here don’t I?
Watanuki Kimihiro is an ordinary student in an ordinary world… But he has a secret. He can see ghosts, demons, and spirits! He meets Ichihara Yuuko, a time and space witch, who claims to have to ability to grant any wish, for a price! And what price does Watanuki have to pay to grant his wish to never see spirits again? Work in Yuuko’s shop as a part-time job, which includes cooking, cleaning and other household chores!

Fruits Basket: Souma Akito

fruits basket cosplay - souma akitoPeople who only watched the anime of Fruits Basket will argue that Akito should be cosplayed by a guy, but the manga reveals that she is actually a girl! I was pretty shocked when I read it… She probably doesn’t want to be a girl because she despises them, saying that they are sneaky creatures that seduce the male Juunishi away from her.

The reason why she is basically the head of the Souma Clan since she is considered to be the Jade Emperor, the ruler of the 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac, so her word is absolute. She’s also very sickly, and the anime mentioned she only has 30 years to live, though I’ve never seen that in the manga.

This is an awesome cosplay of Akito! Very accurate, though I’m not too intimidated by her…

Black Lagoon: Revy

black lagoon cosplay - revyContrary to popular belief (including Havel’s blog where this image was originally found), this is not Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, but rather, she is Revy from Black Lagoon. Although the two characters are quite similar to each other, the give away hint is the tattoo on her arm.
Just like Lara, Revy is quite a proficient warrior, but she is rather strong willed, using whatever means necessary to have her way. She is a murderess, and a thief and uses a lot of foul language; one could even say she has no conscience. Because her weapons of choice are her twin modified Beretta 92F’s, she is nicknamed “Two-Hands” by the people of Roanapur.

cowboy bebop cosplay - edward wong hau pepelu tivrusky IV aka ed
Omg… Nice pose! This girl must do yoga or something. That’s pretty difficult to pull off!
The character she’s cosplaying is called “Ed” who is known how her flexibility and her hacking ability. She’s a bit strange and androgynous, and loves to use her feet on tasks you’d normally use hands to do (like scratch your nose, maybe?). She’s easily distracted, and you’d think of her as a “free spirit”.

death note cosplay - kira, misa, and l

Kids make really adorable cosplayers. Take this picture of Yagami Light (Kira), L. Lawliet (L), and Amane Misa for example. They’re the most adorable Death Note cosplayers I’ve seen so far!

I’ve decided to create a new category in this blog known as “Chibi” to place all the photos of children cosplaying in one group. You can’t resist them, since it’s like seeing your favorite character in their younger years.

I want to take L home now…

Sailor Moon S: Sailor Saturn

sailor moon cosplay - sailor saturnOne of the most powerful Sailor Senshi in the Sailor Moon universe, Sailor Saturn, or Tomoe Hotaru yields the Silence Glaive, a weapon that can destroy the universe.

In the manga, Hotaru is a very mysterious character because she is part cyborg. This was her father’s attempt to save her from the lab accident that killed her mother. In the anime, however, she is not cybernetic, but she is still unpopular among her classmates due to her seizures.

It’s perhaps one of the most difficult tasks to cosplay one of the Sailor Senshi. Their uniforms are quite revealing (to the delight of fanboys everywhere). This cosplayer really got Sailor Saturn’s image perfectly! Great job!

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children: Reno

final fantasy 7 cosplay - reno Reno is well known as the comic relief of Final Fantasy VII. He is a member of the Turks or Department of Administrative Research, a group that perform covert operations on behalf of Shinra. Though his way of wearing his Turks uniform portrays him to be lazy and arrogant, he is actually very skilled in using his weapon, the Electro-Mag Rod, and takes a lot of pride in his work. He also loves to gossip and is a pretty good helicopter pilot.

Quite an impressive cosplay of Reno. One can actually feel his arrogance through the photograph. I wouldn’t be surprised if he accidentally steps on Rude’s sunglasses again though…

Naruto: Momochi Zabuza 02

naruto cosplay - momochi zabuzaPretty cool cosplay of Zabuza if I do say so myself. I must apologize, however… I can’t remember whether this individual was a semi-finalist, or one of the winners of the G2Con. I do remember that during the event, his huge sword kept on hitting the ceiling unintentionally.
But I think he’s a nice rival for the first Zabuza I posted.
Oh the days of when digital cameras were a thing of luxury. I only had one shot to spare per cosplayer, and one chance to get it right. I think Zagato turned out better than this though, don’t you think so?

Tomb Raider: Lara Croft

tomb raider cosplay - lara croftLara Croft is a Tomb Raider in search of lost treasures. Interesting note is that this character was honored a star in the Walk of Game and has earned a Guinness World Record for being the “most successful human video game heroine”.
And to think, she was originally just an Indiana Jones clone.
Actually, this isn’t a fan cosplay. Karima Adebibe is the official model for Lara Croft. She basically cosplays Lara for game promotions on radio, TV, and other media. She also had a small role as the sacrificial maiden in the movie Alien vs. Predator in 2004.
I still think, even if she’s being paid to look like Lara, she does an awesome cosplay. Professionalism at its finest.

Samurai Shodown: Nakoruru

samurai shodown cosplay - nakoruru I’m pretty sure this is Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, but I don’t remember her to have a mask, do you?
Anyway, Nakoruru is living with her grandparent, Sanoku, and younger sister, Rimururu in a place called Ainu Moshiri Kamui Kotan. You could say that the Ainu people are like the Native Americans in the United States; people who are basically very close to nature. Nakoruru’s role in the game is the Defender of Mother Nature, and in some materials, she is refered to as the priestess of the Ainu religion.
I’m seriously wondering what this cosplayer looks like behind her mask… Nice photo still!

Final Fantasy X-2: Rikku

final fantasy x-2 cosplay - rikkuMay I make a note please? That I am in no way biased?
I like featuring Asian Cosplayers because they do cosplay the right way. Cosplay is indeed about fun, but you must also consider how you look when you cosplay. There are a lot of photographers in anime cons, and if you aren’t careful in choosing your cosplay, you’ll end up looking silly and getting laughed at all over the Internet..!
Now who in the world would want that?
Take this photo of Rikku for example… In careful consideration? Her clothes really do look silly on any normal day, but this cosplayer’s got Rikku’s attitude down to a pat. This is why she looks good, and not nerdy.

Don’t you just love the attitude this cosplayer is giving to the photographer? She definitely knows Sasuke-kun very well. It made me realize that cosplaying can also be considered as a style in modeling…
I think this costume was what Sasuke wore back in the earlier episodes of Naruto, right? I think the new seasons are now called “Naruto: Shippuden” or something like that.

I quote from the review:

Some die-hard BLEACH fans say that the black detailing should be blue, while others argue that he/she probably based it off of the manga. I?ve even heard of people complaining about the hair color.

To me, give it a rest people!!! Unless you yourself can cosplay better than this, I suggest critiques should keep their mouths shut! This Ishida in his Quincy outfit is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s! So there! >:E

Air: Tono Minagi

air cosplay - tono minagiBeing an otaku means entering into a world of fantasy where anything can be achieved by anyone. This is a place where people sometimes become a fantasy themselves just for the heck of it…

Enter the world of cosplay.

The term “cosplay” is a merge of 2 words: costume and role-play. As the word suggests, people wear costumes of their anime character of choice then role-play the character, including his/her mannerisms and attitudes.

I have never actually cosplayed myself, though I do appreciate how people work hard to get their costumes and hairstyles to look just right. On the picture is an example. This girl is cosplaying Tono Minagi from the Anime Air. Otakus who are familiar with the anime will think she jumped right out of the game and into the real world.

Now this is what is known to be “real” cosplay…

More pictures to come…

♥ Kamui

Ryeain:
I'm totally blew away by Kamui, her craftsmanship. Seriously, just take a look at her AION Asmodian or her even Druid Tier 6 and others. These are the costumes that I would not have much patient on with the details. But the strong love and passion for the characters and costume is one of the main reason that motivates her to spend thousand of hours and efforts to complete these wonderful detailed costumes.
By interviewing her, I realized good cosplays is not about making a quantity but the quality of cosplay. And a word from her, 'PASSION'. Yes, cosplay for passion and it's the only thing that make us continue on this cosplay journey.
By the way, you guys should really check out Kamui's cosplay website for these awesome tutorials she made, really appreciate that she made a walk-through shares her experience about her costumes with everyone *thumbsup!

Ryea: What is COSPLAY to you?

Cosplay for me is a wonderful chance to live my dreams, work creatively and share my passion with others. And it's a way to prove myself.
Every costume consist of parts, first I need to find the right way to produce it. It's the result of a lot of research and development but it also goes hand in hand with failures and desperation. I have to fight with myself and to force myself never to give up or be desperate. And especially never to stop at one point in my evolution.
It's also very important to share my knowledge and experiences with others. I'm writing tutorials, holding workshops and trying to help everyone with their own projects. I guess, cosplay is not only a hobby, but a whole commnuity of people who love to work creatively.
For me it became something of a lifestyle and even changed my life. I'm not able to imagine a life without it anymore.

Ryea: When do you first started to cosplay?

It was in 2003 and I was just 17 years old.
My costume was the Great Saiyaman from Dragonball Z. The costume itself though was just awful! I used wrong and cheap fabric and everybody saw that I couldn't sew.
However it was a great idea to cosplay, especially because this made the convention even greater than it already was.
I still love the character so much that I've redone my costume last year!

Ryea: How many characters have you cosplayed so far?

They are not so many because most of my latest costumes took a lot of time and money. All in all there were:
-Great Saiyaman from Dragonball Z
-Moogle from Final Fantasy
-Nightelf Druid Tier 1 from World of Warcraft
-Nightelf Druid Tier 3 from World of Warcraft
-Priestess Rao from Okami
-Asmodian Gladiator from Aion (Tower of Eternity)
-Nightelf Druid Tier 8 from World of Warcraft
-Elyos Mage from Aion (Tower of Eterniy)

You see, for 8 years of cosplay it's really nothing spectacular, but I don't care about the amount of costumes. I've picked up very complicated costumes last time and spent several months to finish them, so it's just not possible to create more than 3 or 4 costumes every year.

Ryea: Which is your favorite character that you've cosplayed?

I'm really proud on my Asmodian Gladiator, but I love my Druid Tier sets much more.
It's just because I really love the character, it's story and and it's design. I myself play a Nightelf Druid almost since the release of World of Warcraft and loved them for all this time. So the Druid will be always my favourite one and I'll keep on cosplaying them.

Ryea:Which is your first character?

Like I said it was the Great Saiyaman, but I made this costume and even started with cosplay just because everyone else did it.
There was no passion and no love in this costume and I almost gave up cosplaying.
But when World of Warcraft was released I really started to find enjoyment in sewing, building and painting and the way I see it, my Druid Tier 1 was my first real character.

Ryea: Which characters is in your future cosplay list?

At the moment I'm working on Alexstrazsa and the Druid Tier 9 for me and my boyfriend from World of Warcraft.
I also wanted to finish a Demon Hunter from Diablo III and maybe I will even be able to create something further, but I won't start with it until I'm done with my actual projects.

Ryea: Do you make your own costume & props?

Yup, I create everything myself.
My boyfriend helps me sometimes by painting and I get help from many tutorials and progress blogs, but everything is done by myself.

Ryea: Which is your most satisfied prop/costume so far?

Journey's End is my big love.
I learned a lot of techniques by building it and there is something special about it. Probably it's because of the story behind the staff in World of Warcraft ,maybe all the work I spent making it or maybe it's the design. I don't know, but I really love this staff a lot.

Ryea: What is your favorite part when cosplay?

It's the constrution. It's awesome to create something by your own hand and just follow your creativity.
I love to work with new materials, develop new techniques and solve problems after many tries. And it's just great to see that I'm not alone with my questions, find nice tutorials or share my experience with others and help them with their stuff.
And at the end, when I see all my progress photos, it's just amazing to see how something starts so tiny, grows, becomes larger and gets a shape and color. When the last layer of vanish dried and everything works like it should, yeah, then I'm really proud of the work I've done and cannot wait to show it to the world. It's just an amazing feeling!

Ryea: Any good/funny/memorable experience when you cosplay?

Yeah, I guess it was on the stage at Blizzcon 2009 at the dance contest.
It was very late and I was unbelivably exhausted, because I already had to wear my heavy leather armor and my staff for 12 hours straight and I just wanted to go on stage as fast as possible, to do my perfomance and go directly to the hotel afterwards.
In the last hours I had to stand in line and to wait for 2 hours; my feet burned like hell in my high heels and my body was just a huge chunk of pain. It was very, very hard trying not to collapse or even fall asleep right there on the ground.
Today I can't remember much of what happened when I entered the stage, danced and left the convention. I guess, it was just too much for my body, despite of it being just amazing to stand in front of 20000 people and a lot of other guys who watched the show on the internet. Ehm... I guess...

Ryea: How and what have you think you've improved from since you started cosplay?

I don't think that I improved my sewing skills so much, because they are still pretty bad. But I learned a lot: I know how to work with many materials, how to solve problems that cannot be solved, how to bring a character to live and especially how to share my knowledge with others.
I know a lot more about armor and prop making and found many friends and sources who can help me if I fail. I guess my biggest improved is knowing, what cosplay means to me: Never giving up, helping others and dream my dream. And everything I need will come by itself.

Ryea: Do you salute/idolize any cosplayer?

Hmm... there are many cosplayers and prop makes who do a really awesome work and I always follow their work.
My favourite one is Volpin, who is just dedicated prop maker and shows that he puts all his love into his project.
I learned a lot from his wonderful blog and always cannot wait to read the next entry. I'm very thankful for him sharing his progress and so I do the same and hope to help others with my work, too.

Ryea: Any tips to share?

Start with small projects and start early enough. Sewing the night before a convention is really frustrating, even if it can be really funny. Know how much time, money and effort you are able to spent and plan your projects well.
And the most important point is to search for help, tutorials and progress blogs. There is always someone, who worked on a similar project or costume part and even shared his work. If not, asked him! It can be very expensive and frustrating to fail and a project does makes much more fun, if you're sucessful.
And the last point: Be brave and never give up! If you really want to finish a well made costume, then you'll do it!

Ryea: Do you think great craftmanship is a person's talent or it's a result of long term practice ?

I don't believe in talent. But I believe in passion. If someone loves his project, he will try everything to finish it well made and if he doesn't have the skills, he will research, exercise and try until he manages it. I'm also very bad in sewing and painting, but I found ways to hide this fact or to get help and I will keep on working on my skills.

and 3 random questions :

1) What makes you interested in cosplaying armoured characters?

By chosing my costumes it's very important for me to find new challenges and to improve my skills every year.
I don't want to remain at the same level and so I try to experiment a lot and try new materials and techniques. That's also the reason why I look for hard, detailed or complicated costumes and for me armor and prop building is just perfect for this job.
However wearing them is -after some hours- mostly connected to a lot of pain and it's very exhausting and painful, but the construction process is amazing and just full of fun. So last year I really learned a lot. I even learned to ignore the pain of wearing an armor for hours till end.

2) How or where do you learn the skills of making those props and amour?

I love to experiment and research. I spent a lot of time in planning before I start with a project and I'm always motivated to create a costume as similar as possible to the reference material.
After years of practise I've learned a lot with the help from the internet and just by testing different materials and methods. Things often don't work as planned and sometimes I failed many times till I get right.
It's really not easy, but I start with my projects early enough to have a lot of time for my experiments. And that's all I did.

3) What kind of challenge do you see when you start making Aion?

The whole costume was a challenge. I never worked with Wonderflex before and had no idea if this material would work, but the tutorials said "yes". So I ordered some sheets and prayed that they were right.
After some tests I found the right way to work with it, but at the end I stood in front of a 20 pound heavy armor and had no idea how to fixate it onto my body. Many experiments later only I found a conclusion for it and it was the last night before the convention! and almost died because of the pain I got in this costume. Moving was almost impossible and so I had to redo the fixing, because I planned to fight in the armor for a cosplay performance.
I also never styled a wig before, but the hair style I had to create was very complicated. Ah, and I never worked with the kind of fabric I used before. I guess, I never worked with anything I used before for this costume!
Yeah, every part of the Aion armor was a huge challenge and so I'm really proud that I was able to finish it.

And lastly, what do you think about Let's Cosplay~?

I really love the idea behind Let's Cosplay and enjoy to read something about about other cosplayers a lot.
It's really interesting and I love the personal, non-standard questions you ask. I will keep on following this wonderful blog and hope to read something about more cosplayers and maybe even something about my friends.

Thanks so much Kamui for the wonderful answers, I bet you've helped to motivate others in making amour and props.. and that includes me !! Thanks!
